Scriptures in Daniel reveal that there are principalities and powers in the form of Archangels ruling over nations. Such a ruling power over the ancient empire was called The Prince of Persia. Iran is a continuation of the ancient Persians. They are not Arabs. Do they still have an angelic prince ruling their destiny?
The nation of Iran carries the heavy weight of its ancient Persian heritage, a heritage defined by both divine favor and spiritual conflict. God's task to Cyrus was to be the "hammer" that shattered the pride of Babylon and the "shepherd" who released the Jews from captivity to build their new Jerusalem.. The decrees of Cyrus, Darius, and Artaxerxes provided the legal and financial necessities for the restoration of the Temple and the city of Jerusalem, establishing a prophetic timeline that revealed the coming of the Messiah.
Is there a possible role again for the descendents of the Persian empire...modern day Iran?
Can they once again bring down Babylon and release the people of God to build the New Jerusalem?
The Angelic Hierarchy and the Prince of Persia
The Bible provides explicit indications that the geopolitical affairs of nations are influenced, and at times governed, by high-ranking angelic beings. This spiritual hierarchy includes both holy archangels and fallen "princes" who contest the divine will in the heavenly places.
The Revelation in Daniel 10
The most detailed insight into this reality is found in the tenth chapter of the Book of Daniel. While Daniel was in Susa, the metropolis of Persia, he fasted for three weeks, seeking understanding regarding the future of his people. A heavenly messenger appeared to him, explaining that he had been sent from the first day of Daniel’s prayer but had been delayed for twenty-one days.
The cause of the delay was a spiritual being called the "Prince of the kingdom of Persia". This entity "withstood" the messenger until Michael, "one of the chief princes" arrived to assist him. This passage establishes several critical theological points:
-Territorial Angelic Rulers: Specific angelic beings are assigned to particular nations or empires.
- Spiritual Warfare for Nations: The delay of twenty-one days reflects a persistent spiritual combat that Paul writes to tell us we "wrestle with principalities and powers"
-Hierarchy of Authority: Michael is identified as a "chief prince" and specifically as "your prince" , implying a unique role in protecting the covenant people against these national princes.
The Persistence of the Prince of Persia
The heavenly messenger informed Daniel that after delivering his message, he would return to fight the Prince of Persia, and that the "Prince of Grecia" would eventually come. This corresponds precisely with the historical transition of world power from the Persian Achaemenids to the Greek Empire under Alexander the Great.
If the angelic governance of nations is a consistent feature of God’s providential arrangement, then it is logical to assume that a "Prince of Persia" still exists. And if he still exists does that Prince of Iran/Persia still have a divine mandate to war against Babylon that has captured the people of God?
The Law of the Medes and Persians
The "Law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not," is a recurring theme in the Book of Daniel. This legal stability was a double-edged sword: it was used by the enemies of Daniel to cast him into the lion’s den, but it was also the mechanism that protected the Jews during the reign of Xerxes (Ahasuerus). Because a king's decree could not be rescinded, once Cyrus and Darius had issued their proclamations in favor of the Jews, those edicts became part of the permanent legal fabric of the empire.
God’s Divine Task to Cyrus Regarding Babylon
The rise of Cyrus II, commonly known as Cyrus the Great, marks one of the most explicit interventions of God in world history. Cyrus ascended the throne of Anshan around 559 B.C. and rapidly displaced the Median king Astyages, establishing the Persians as the ascendant power within the Medo-Persian coalition. His primary task, as revealed in Scripture, was the dismantling of the Babylonian monarchy—a system that had become the quintessential symbol of human pride and rebellion against God.
The Prophetic Fore-naming and Anointing of Cyrus
Long before Cyrus was born, the prophet Isaiah identified him by name, an act of divine foreknowledge that occurred approximately 140 to 150 years prior to the events. In Isaiah 44:28, Yahweh declares of Cyrus, "He is my shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure," and in Isaiah 45:1, He identifies him as His "anointed" (Mashiach). This is a unique designation for a Gentile ruler, signifying that Cyrus was set apart for a specific redemptive purpose.
The task assigned to Cyrus involved the subjection of Babylon, which God described as "opening before him the two-leaved gates". Historical accounts, including those of Josephus, suggest that Cyrus became aware of these prophecies after his conquest of Babylon. Josephus writes that when Cyrus read the book of Isaiah and saw his own name mentioned as the one who would restore the Temple, he was seized by a "divine ambition" to fulfill the word of God. This indicates that Cyrus viewed his military conquests not merely as personal achievements but as a commission from the "God of heaven".
The manner of how Cyrus conquered Babylon was that he dried up the river that flowed through Babylon and then entered the city unopposed.
The Fall of Babylon as Divine Judgment
The destruction of the Babylonian monarchy was a fulfillment of the "vengeance of the Temple" prophesied by Jeremiah. Babylon had fallen into deep idolatry and was ruled by monarchs who had desecrated the sacred vessels of Yahweh’s house. The final fall occurred during the feast of Belshazzar, where the handwriting on the wall—Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin—signaled that the kingdom had been numbered, weighed, and divided among the Medes and Persians.
Cyrus’s role was to be the "hammer of the whole earth" that broke the Babylonian power. Unlike the previous conquerors, however, Cyrus was tasked with a "humane" liberation. Archaeological evidence from the Cyrus Cylinder confirms that his policy was to return the gods of various nations to their sanctuaries and to repatriate displaced peoples. This secular policy was the historical mechanism through which God fulfilled the prophecy of the seventy-year exile.

The Edicts of the Persian Kings and the Restoration of the People of God
Following the task of subduing Babylon, the Persian kings issued a series of administrative decrees that provided the legal and financial framework for the restoration of the Jewish people and the worship of Yahweh in Jerusalem. These decrees are unique in the ancient world for their explicit recognition of the sovereignty of the God of Israel.
The Primary Decree of Cyrus (c. 538 B.C.)
In his first regnal year, Cyrus issued a proclamation throughout his entire empire: "The Lord God of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to build him an house at Jerusalem". This decree authorized any Jew who wished to return to Judah to do so and commanded their neighbors to assist them with "silver, and with gold, and with goods, and with beasts".
Cyrus also restored the 5,400 gold and silver vessels that Nebuchadnezzar had looted from the first Temple, delivering them to Sheshbazzar, the prince of Judah. This act was not merely a political gesture but a ritual reversal of the Babylonian desecration. The decree was formally recorded as a memorandum in the archives at Ecbatana, ensuring its legal continuity despite future opposition.
The Confirmation Decree of Darius I (c. 520 B.C.)
The building process was stalled for nearly twenty years due to the interference of the "people of the land" and the Cutheans (Samaritans). These adversaries hired counselors to frustrate the Jews' purpose throughout the reigns of Cyrus and his successor Cambyses. However, in the second year of Darius I (Darius the Great), a new search of the archives was conducted at the request of the governor Tattenai.
Upon finding the original edict of Cyrus, Darius issued a new, even more comprehensive decree:
Imperial Funding:
The expenses for the Temple construction were to be paid "with all diligence" from the royal taxes of the province "Beyond the River".
Sacrificial Provisions:
Darius ordered that the priests be provided with whatever they needed daily—bullocks, rams, lambs, wheat, salt, wine, and oil—so they could offer "sacrifices of sweet savours unto the God of heaven".
Intercession for the King:
Most significantly, Darius requested that the Jews "pray for the life of the king, and of his sons".
Severe Penalties:
He declared that anyone who attempted to alter the decree would have the timber of his own house used to hang him, and his house would be turned into a dunghill.
The Edicts of Artaxerxes I (c. 458 and 445 B.C.)
The final stage of the Persian restoration occurred under Artaxerxes I Longimanus. In his seventh year (c. 458 B.C.), he issued a decree to Ezra the priest, authorizing him to lead a second wave of exiles and to establish the Law of God as the law of the land. Artaxerxes granted Ezra vast sums of silver and gold and exempted all Temple personnel—including singers and porters—from paying any form of toll or tribute.
In his twentieth year (c. 445 B.C.), Artaxerxes granted a second commission to Nehemiah, his cupbearer, to rebuild the walls and gates of Jerusalem.

The Gulf Wars and the Spiritual Shift in the Region
When applying these biblical truths to modern events like the Gulf wars, we must consider the spiritual "Princes" who influence the region’s leadership. For centuries, the Persian region was characterized by the "decrees" of kings who favored the preservation of the Jewish people. However, the 1979 revolution in Iran marked a shift toward a leadership that aligns more closely with the adversarial "Prince of Persia" described in Daniel 10.
This modern Iran positions itself as the primary challenger to the current world economic system, which it views as corrupt and "Babylonian" in its materialism. The ongoing conflicts in the Persian Gulf—vital for the transport of the world's energy resources—directly threaten the stability of this global economic order. Revelation 18 warns that the world’s economic system is fragile and subject to sudden collapse
Applying Ancient Decrees and Spiritual Realities to the Modern Era
The historical and spiritual framework of the Persian Empire provides a lens through which we can interpret modern conflicts, including the Gulf wars and Iran’s contemporary role in global affairs. Evangelical scholarship emphasizes that the "decrees" of history and the "princes" of the spirit realm do not simply vanish but move toward a final eschatological climax.
Iran and the Destruction of the "World Babylon" Economic System
In the Book of Revelation, "Babylon the Great" is described as a global commercial and political entity. Revelation 18 provides a detailed list of commodities—gold, silver, precious stones, silk, scarlet, ivory, and "slaves, and souls of men"—that the merchants of the earth trade with her. This system is characterized by luxury and an absence of spiritual value.
Historically, Babylon was a center of international trade, and its fall under Cyrus led to a redistribution of that wealth to the Temple in Jerusalem. Prophetically, the final Babylon is destroyed "in one hour" by the judgment of God. However, the Scripture also indicates that the "ten horns" (kings) who are part of the final world beast will eventually "hate the whore" and "make her desolate".
In the modern context, Iran (Persia) has frequently sought to undermine the Western-dominated global economic order, which many biblical interpreters associate with the "Babylonian" system of commerce. While Iran itself may not be the sole cause of Babylon’s destruction, its alignment with other powers in the "latter years" suggests it will be a major catalyst in the geopolitical shifts that precede the fall of this system.
Here is my application prediction:
The law of Persia said that the Laws of the Medes and Persia decreed by the king cannot be altered. Which is why Daniel was cast into the lions den. When he emerged unhurt the king of Persia made this decree for all time incumbent on the Persians:
Daniel 6: 25-27
"Then king Darius wrote unto all people nations and languages that dwell on the face of the earth, Peace be multiplied unto you, I make a decree...That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel for he is a living God and steadfast forever and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed and hiis dominion shall be even unto the end, He delivers and rescues and he works signs and wonders in heaven and on the earth who has delivered Daniel from the power of he lions."
This law applies to Persia/Iran today...they will in time recognize the God of Daniel....Jesus Christ.
I believe their Prince of Persia still has a mandate to bring down Babylon...by doing what the book of Revelation says "stopping the flow of the river Euphrates" (Rev.16:12) thaat brings down modern day Babylon. Except this time it is the flow through the Strait of Hormuz. When Iran closes that for weeks or months....the world economy goes into collapse.
And what about the divine mandate to deliver the people of God from Babylonian captivity? I described inmy Part 3 Guld war series why I believe the attrition war strategy of Iran will collapse Israel. And when Israel falls then the people of God, the Church can get out of end times deception, realize they are the Israel of God and get on with building God's New Jerusalem that will heal the nations after the coming great world economic collapse.
